Are You Ready for Some Football?
September 8, 2010

NFL season kicks off Thursday night, and the only question bigger than what will be written in Tim Tebow’s eye black, what's going on with Tom Brady’s hair and what will it take to get Brett Farve to really retire, is where you’re gonna watch all that action unfold this season. If you’re still on the hunt for a local haunt, here are a few suggestions whether you’re captain of your fantasy team or just there for the nachos.

If you’re just looking to party, try:
Brother Jimmy’s
It’s not really a Sunday Funday unless you’ve pounded five PBR tallboys and made out with a stranger. Filled with flat screens and people who prefer "frickles" to chicken fingers (and who wouldn't?), Brother Jimmy's is the place to go if you like your game-day with a side of flirtation (make your move when the Lady Gaga comes on during late-night commercial breaks)…you see, even Giants and Cowboys fans get along with enough shots of Jameson.
Multiple Locations: Upper East Side, Murray Hill, Union Square, Upper West Side, Midtown

If you’re tired of Murray Hill bars, but you live in Murray Hill, try: Van Diemen’s
If there’s one thing Murray Hill has aplenty (other than unemployed I-bankers), it’s sports bars, and can any new ones compete with the monstrosity that is Tonic East (a roof deck with TVs!!!)? But what Van Diemen’s lacks in traditional sports bar accoutrement, they make up for with warm décor (exposed brick walls!), a low-key attitude and a $25 all-you-can-drink draft special (plus an order of wings). Bonus: Shecky's groups of 10-or-more get even more great deals when booking with Party Aid!
383 3rd Ave (27th & 28th Sts.), Murray Hill, 212.532.1123

If the smell of dive bars makes you gag, try: The Ainsworth
You know on those Oprah makeover episodes, where she takes a frumpy girl, teaches her a thing or two about hair and makeup, and [cue audience scream-session] suddenly she’s beautiful? Well that’s what the Ainsworth did to your average sports bar, nixing the sticky floors and fluorescent beer signs for chic wooden décor, trendy wallpaper and a food menu featuring the likes of lobster roll sliders and filet mignon. Oh, and there’s over 40 flat screens for those actually watching the game. Just don’t expect your tab to be as pretty …who said you can’t put a price on beauty?
122 W. 26th St. (6th & 7th Aves), Chelsea, 212.741.0646

If you’re head of your fantasy league, try: Hudson Station
When Hudson Station opens mid-September it will solve three of the most prominent football-viewing problems: 1) you can’t see over that jerk’s fat head, 2) you want to watch the Giants, and the Saints, and the Bills…3) you don’t want to spend the next 8 hours of your Sunday in a dark, claustrophobic closet that smells like beer and nachos. From any point in the sprawling space (7,500sqft over three floors), you’ll be able to see six different flatscreens, so while you’re checking out the Giants on the enormous projector, you can still make sure that Ocho Cinco dances his way to the endzone.
440 Ninth Ave (@ 35th St.), Midtown, 212.244.4406

If you’re ready to get 3 sheets to the wind, try: 3 Sheets Saloon
Really what do you expect from the guys who did Down the Hatch, Off the Wagon and the 13th Step, a dinner club? Taking over the former Town Tavern space, this Greenwich Village newbie is keeping the tradition alive with half price beer of any kind from noon till close on gameday, as well as Monday night football specials. The catch? They’ve promised to dedicate 80 percent of their 20 HD TVs to those darn Iggles, so unless you’re a fan of the birds, you might look elsewhere.
134 W. 3rd St. (6th Ave. & MacDougal St.), Greenwich Village, 212.777.1733

If you actually like the taste of beer, try: The Village Pourhouse
The Brother Jimmy’s of sports bars, this expanding franchise is quickly becoming the go-to spot for sports fans around the city. Divey enough not to feel pretentious but sporting over 20 brews on tap, it’s one of the few spots in the city where ordering up a series of craft brews won’t send you to the other kind of poor house. Plus, they’re not above a good drink special, so NFL Sundays enjoy $5 Bloody Mary’s and mimosas, $25 domestic buckets of beer, and $12 Bud Light pitchers.
Multiple Locations: East Village, Theater District, Upper West Side

If you’re a fan of some obscure team no one else cares about, try: Jack Russell’s Pub
If you’re a Giants or Jets fan, you won’t have any trouble finding a bar that’s showing your game and showing it to a room full of like-minded strangers. But for those few and proud/depressed folks rooting for say, the Chiefs, it’s not always as easy to celebrate in public. Rally your fellow Kansas City fans and reserve a booth at Jack Russell’s pub where you’ll have your very own personal TV. Sure, the rest of the bar may stare when you jump up screaming that they actually won a game, but who are they to judge?
366 W 46th St. (8th & 9th Aves), Midtown, 212.979.2337

If you want the game to be your pregame, try: The Downtown Galway Hooker
You’ll need a good set of sea-legs to navigate this nautical-themed pub right in the heart of the West Village, as its three floors are constantly packed with revelers looking for their next conquest. Fortunately on gameday, the crowd’s just as rambunctious but their focus is on the game, not their game. P.S. for you Redskins fans out there, the Hooker’s Midtown location is offering up $1 Bud and Bud Light drafts (with the purchase of a souvenir cup, $2 otherwise), as well as $5 shots of Red Stag.
133 7th Ave So. (@ Charles St.), West Village, 212.675.6220

If Mondays are your new Sundays, try: The Hill
On any given Sunday at this chic Murray Hill sports bar, you’re bound to find crowds of twenty-somethings catching the game on one of their 25 HDTVs, but Monday nights are when the real party begins. Hosted by a series of NFL celebrities like Braylon Edwards, Shonn Greene and Dhani Jones, MMG's New York Monday Night Football Series also features $20 all you can eat wings and draught beer until 9:30pm (2 hour maximum). See, having a case of the Mondays isn’t always a bad thing!

Great post! My girlfriends and I are always looking for places to watch football but its to tough to find sports bars that are offering the atmosphere we want, looks like there are a few to pick and choose from here.

Nice work highlighting the Ainsworth. It definitely doesn't have $2 PBRs but it isn't prohibitively expensive. I think they have $12 pitchers of domestic beers on Saturdays when they play all of the college football games.

Thanks for the rundown! My friends are always looking for good sports bars. We'll definitely be checking some of these out.
