Even though we live on an island, the Big Apple is a fruit picked far from the tropics. Fortunately, NYC boasts all different genres of bars and restaurants so we can escape to a different land if we choose. While you can’t find white sand on Coney Island or crystal blue waters on the Hudson, the city offers a bevy of beachy huts and tiki bars where you can lounge in a true tropical atmosphere. The summer is in full swing and to honor the hot weather, Shecky’s has a list of go-to joints where the tiki cups come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you want to have a rip-tacular time with board bros at Surf Bar or take in tropical climates at Cienfuegos, we’ve got your beachy boozing set! Sit back, relax and get laid…with a Hawaiian lei, of course.

The Suffolk
The folk at the Suffolk strip down to their bikinis and lounge on the backdoor patio while sipping on umbrella drinks and mingling with other beach dwellers. While the outdoor area isn’t huge, it’s covered in sand so you can take off those uncomfortable stilettos and sink your toes into a warm blanket of faux shore front property. And there’s a bonus—$3 beers! Fight the heat with a frosty brew for a very reasonable price. You’ll forget you’re in Manhattan when you’re basking in some rays on the sandy patio and cheap drinks you won’t be able to find anywhere else!
The Suffolk, 107 Suffolk St. Bt. Delancey & Rivington Sts. (Lower East Side) 212.982.5008 |
The Rusty Knot
The grandfather’s basement-styled bar is a haven for hip sea dwellers looking to spend cash on drinks, food and some summer jams on the juke at the Rusty Knot. Overlooking the Hudson River, this West Village hangout is the epitome of vintage beach vibes where you’ll find the décor plastered on the glossy pages of a '50s issue of Home and Garden Magazine. Grab some friends and dig your faces into some Sloppy Joe’s ($9) paired with the Rusty Knot’s signature cocktail, The Rusty Knot ($8). This place isn’t rusty in a bad way, it’s just like wine: the longer it's aged, the better!

Tropical 128
When you want to venture to a tropical paradise, you don’t need to take the grueling trip to JFK. Instead, hop on over to Tropical 128, right here in the big city! This bar boasts a fabulous island theme with fake palm trees and bright décor. You’ll feel completely relaxed when you show up in your grass skirt and order a cocktail. The tropical drinks change weekly each season, so inquire with the bartenders when you’re there to see which fruity beverage you want to sip on all night. The Pineapple Mango Mojito ($14) is one of our faves but you don’t have to take our word for it. Drink up the tropics all year round at Tropical 128!

Surf Bar
Cowabunga, dude! Down at Surf Bar, patrons get their California dreamin' down with dozens of surf boards hung on the ceilings in an airy, open space. This resto serves up some serious sea treats like the classic "Conch Fritters" ($12) and "Gumbo De Freddy" ($17) which is a seafood shishkabab with corn meal and greens on the side. Hit up the patio on a cool summer night after you dine where the west coast vibe kicks up a notch with green shrubs and vibrant flowers. Sip on your tiki cup or an ice cold brew if you prefer. Whichever you choose, it’s chill, man.

The chic yet laid back joint makes for a tranquil escape, with tables decorated with beautiful white orchids and the warm woods make you feel just that-comfortably cozy! The menu offers modern tropical drinks and new American food with Polynesian flair. Try a classic Mai Tai ($13) or a take a dip in the Tiki Corner with a Blue Hawaiian ($13 Demerara rum, lemon, pineapple juice, coco lopez and blue curaçao). For dinner, order the Wild Striped Bass ($26). Trust us, it’s worth every penny!

Otto’s Shrunken Head
This go-to New York tiki bar is infamous for their drink menu, and the cups that they come in! Put down a $5 deposit when you order one of Otto’s cocktails that come in the famous fun tiki cups and if you don’t want to keep it then bring the cup to your bartender when it’s finished to get your money back. But why would you want to? Cocktails like the Naughty Nell, Scurvy Dog and Otto’s Octame all go for $10, which is a steal considering how tipsy you get after one! But we definitely advise you to get as many as possible. Your tiki cup collection will thank you for it!

Cienfuegos
Say hola to Cienfuegos, a resto where Cuban flair meets classy sophistication. You’ll mistake your stay here for a chic joint nestled on a hot Havana beach with the beautifully green painted walls and authentic style. Not only is Cienfuegos an escape from the busy city with a romantic Latin feel, but the cocktail and food menu are both something to brag about. Nibble on the "Callos En Salsa De Chorizo" ($15) which are seared diver scallops served on pan-roasted potato topped with chorizo sauce. Wash that down with the "Funky Old Man From Martinique," which consists of rhum saint james royal ambre, lime, mint, cane, angostura and champagne. This funky drink is meant for two so you and your significant other can sip together! Cienfuegos is the perfect date spot, and who would pass down a night to dine and drink on a Cuban beach?

Zombie Hut
If you aren’t familiar with the popular tiki drink, Zombie, then you might want to check out Zombie Hut. Be warmed, a Zombie will bring you one step closer to becoming the walking dead just with one sip, so try something a little more easy on the liver…just kidding! Gilligan’s is $8, which is definitely worth the vodka, three different rums, and OJ that's mixed into one drink. If you’re hording the hut with a posse, grab a Scorpion Bowl that’s meant to be shared between 4 people for $26. Lounge outside on the patio where picnic tables await but don’t stumble into them. Those splinters will hurt!
