Spiked Treats: A Twist on Your Favorite Childhood Sweets
July 4, 2012

You were just a kid when summer was your favorite season, full of breaks from school, pool parties and family trips to the town ice cream parlor. Now you’re working to save up for an air conditioner and still paying off student loans. Sure, the days of sleeping in and building sandcastles may be long gone, replaced by sweltering subway stops and chub rub, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a taste of that childhood summer fun. Shecky’s has rounded up mouth-watering treats you loved as a kid with a mature (read: alcoholic) makeover you’ll love as an adult. From alcohol-infused milkshakes to ice pops, spiked snow cones to egg creams, these treats will take your taste buds back in time quicker than you can say “Benjamin Button!”

Chocolate Cake Shake
Nothing gets a kid (and most adults) go crazy like chocolate! The Bowery Diner knows how to twist a classic Chocolate Cake Milkshake ($6.75) into something anyone 21 and older can fancy by adding Chartreuse or Strega (additional $3.25) to the blender. Sip that up with a hamburger deluxe ($12) and your classic all-American meal will be reminiscent of something Marty McFly would scarf down at Lou’s Café. The Bowery Diner’s ambiance pays homage to the blockbuster hit that will bring back memories of childhood movies past!

Mojito Snow Cones
Just when you think Gansevoort can’t get any more fabulous, the trendy rooftop bar churns out something in high demand every summer in Manhattan–snow! Of course, this type of snow isn’t falling from the sky…it’s coming out of a machine that’s sure to bring back childhood memories. But this time, these sno cones are infused with alcohol to make for some very tasty treats. Our fave flavor is the mojito because it’s a perfect taste of minty freshness on a hot summer day. Whip up your own for just $6 while you chill out on the roof top amidst the immaculate views of our beloved city.

Pineapple Coconut Egg Cream
Prepare your taste buds to take a journey to the tropics when you try Demi Monde’s Pineapple Coconut Egg Cream. With its velvety texture, sipping on this tasty drink will make you feel like you’re on an island, lounging out by the Caribbean. Add gin, vodka, rum, or tequila to the frosty bev ($14) and viola! You’ve got yourself a fruity serving of a bev that’ll soothe those sweat beads away in just one sip. Not a fan of coconut? Try their Grapefruit soda also spiked with your choice of gin, vodka, rum, or tequila ($14) for the same refreshing fruity experience.

Girls Scout Thin Mint
When Girls Scout season rolls around, we’re all thinking the same thing–thin mints and tagalongs! While peanut butter is yummy enough to eat out of the jar, there’s nothing like a cool mint feeling that chills your body on the way down to your belly! Bill’s Bar and Burger serves up a taste for all those Girls Scout cookie fans with the Girl Scout Thin Mint shake ($6.95). Add just $4 and get a shot of Bailey’s Irish Cream to go along with it! Made with vanilla ice cream, chocolate, and mint, this shake will cure your craving for Thin Mints in a matter of gulps!

Mango & Guava Malibu Coconut Popsicle
Get a little loopy at the Loopy Doopy Rooftop Bar that’s perched on top of the Conrad New York Hotel. Taking the childhood favorite, a popsicle, and making it into an adult-friendly treat has New Yorkers buzzing! Take a bite out of the Mango and Guava Malibu Coconut Popsicle ($16) that’s made from fruit puree then dunked in a glass of prosecco. The fancy pops are served in wide glasses so you won’t get dripped on by the fruity goodness…kids aren’t the only ones who get accidental popsicle stains!

Johnnie + Kumquat Ice Cream
The allure of ice cream, gelato, and sorbet ain’t just for the kiddies…especially if you can give your frozen dessert an extra kick with some Johnnie. That’s right, Cones doesn’t disappoint with their spiked ice creams make to please Manhattanites who want to be cooled down and liquored up at the same time. The Johnnie Walker Black and Kumquat combo ($9.50) is sweet enough to be ice cream but lethal enough to cause a whisky-tips. The new take on a classic during-breakfast, after-lunch-and-dinner delight has adults leaving Cones with smiles on their faces. Kum (quat) to the West Village to get your taste of fruit and whisky in the same spoonful!

Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake with Vodka
S’mores are a camping tradition but when you’re sweating up a storm on a hot night in the woods, the last thing you want are sticky mallows getting all over your fingers. Enter Stand with their Toasted Marshmallow Milkshake with Vodka ($9 for a mini, $11 for a giant). Vanilla ice cream and vodka are blended together for a silky shake that’s topped off with roasted marshmallows for a booze-induced camp fire sesh! No need for bug spray, this Greenwich Village eatery will leave you tipsily happy sans mosquito bites.
Stand, 24 E. 12th St. Bt. University Pl. & 5th Ave. (Greenwich Village) 212.488.5900

Tequila Snow Cones
When you’re at a resto inspired mostly by Latin culture, you’re going to get a whole lot of carafes full of tequila, a feature we aren’t complaining about! Take the famed liquor and drizzle some on a snow cone and you’ve got a cocktail in solid form! Try all 3 flavors (tamarind, hibiscus and strawberry) for $12 and beat the heat with Zengo’s top shelf tequila snow cones. Your body will thank you later when you get back to a stuffy apartment, AC nowhere to be found.
Zengo & La Biblioteca, 622 3rd Ave. @ 40th St. (Midtown East) 212.808.8110
