Where You'll Be Drinking & Dining This Fall
September 12, 2012

September isn’t just the start of a new year of fashion in New York City—it also kicks off the most exciting season for the city’s drinking ‘n’ dining scene. Now that Fashion Week is almost over, we can focus on the other two parts of the trifecta that makes NYC the best city in the world—food and booze. There are tons of restaurants and bar openings every day in this city, but there’s a handful of buzz-worthy boîtes and joints opening their doors this fall to whet those thirsty tongues and empty bellies. To help you sort through the hullabaloo of A-list chefs, craft cocktails and ostrich schnitzel (seriously) to find the best of the buzz, we’ve narrowed the hefty, hyped-up list down to just 10 go-to spots for fall. Ready or not, here comes autumn and Shecky’s picks for the best new spots of the season!

The Butterfly
The highly anticipated resto, The Butterfly, has been keeping foodies everywhere at the edge of their seats. The renowned Michael White is known for being THE Italian cuisine master but his Wisconsin roots have his heart strings tugging in a different direction for his new eatery. The Butterfly will be a mid-century styled bar that will boast classic cocktails (like Old Fashioned’s) with a supper club vibe to boot. Think good old fashioned American bar food with an elegant twist. White’s specialty burger will be a brisket-blend hunk of beef decorated with white American cheese, McClure’s pickles, red onion, and mustard. Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait for the caterpillar to come out of the cocoon. The Butterfly won’t be open until November or December. Our mouths will be watering until then!
The Butterfly, 225 W. Broadway @ White St. (Tribeca)
The Marrow
First he won season 1 of "Top Chef", then he opened the popular Kin Shop in the West Village, and now he’s staying in WV but going from Asia to Europe. The Marrow is going to happily mix Italian and German cuisine with its main focus on meat. The kitchen is open to patrons as you chow down on tasty dishes like braised brisket braciola and ostrich schnitzel. German and Austrian whites and Italian reds make up the 70+ wine list so bring your drinking caps! The Marrow is set to open in mid-November when the air is chilly and perfect for some heavy drinking and eating.
The Marrow, 99 Bank St. Bt. Greenwich & Hudson Sts. (West Village)
Lavender Lake
While you’re waiting for the highly anticipated restos and bars of this list to open, you can chill out at Lavender Lake. The bar, recently renovated from horse stables, offers brunch, cocktails and a patio just in time to be utilized for the end of summer leading into the crisp fall nights. If you get too chilly, you can hang indoors where you’ll feel a touch more classy than normal thanks to the chic décor. The trip to Gowanus is worth every MetroCard swipe this fall and the best part is you don’t need to wait for the Lavender Lake to open.

Pouring Ribbons
Experience is definitely valued in the bar business. When big hitters like Toby Maloney, Jason Cott, Troy Sidle, and Joaquín Simó of Death & Co. team up, you know you’re in for one epic treat. Pouring Ribbons offers an eclectic cocktail menu featuring the egg white bev appropriately named One Flight Up (pisco brandy, blanc vermouth, lemon juice and Campari) since the baroque space is on the second floor. The opening of Pouring Ribbons in slated for Mid-September. We can already taste the goodness.
Pouring Ribbons, 225 Ave. B Bt. 13th & 14th Sts. (East Village) 917.656.6788
Jeepney
All New Yorkers have favorite Thai restos, Chinese take-out joints, and sushi bars but there is a sad shortage of Filipino cuisine. Enter Jeepney, the new Filipino restaurant that will take your taste buds on a trip to the pacific islands. This family-styled eatery is located in the East Village with a colorful décor scheme and large portions that give you a bang for your buck! At Jeepney, it’s all about quantity and quality!
Jeepney, 201 1st Ave. Bt. 12th & 13th Sts. (East Village) 212.318.0152
Murray’s Cheese Bar
To all those who are lactose-intolerant, we're sorry about this one! Murray’s Cheese Bar is one dairy-filled good time and we love everything they have to offer. From the cheesy pastas ($12) to the flavorful sandwich “melts” ($12-$16), we can’t get enough. Wash these delightful dishes with some craft beer in a bottle or straight from the tap ($6 and up) and you’ve got yourself one perfect meal. Since its opening, Murray’s Cheese Bar is gaining as much, if not more, popularity than it’s counterpart, Murray’s Cheese Shop. If you

Exchange Alley
New Orleans meets New York City at the Exchange Alley. When you want a touch of jazz and an atmosphere from a different era, Alphabet City does you blues-loving, alcohol imbibers proud! The menu  fuses southern and seafood together like orecchiette with sweet sausage ($16) and red snapper ($19). The drink menu is a little more casual offering only wine and beer. But in the age of prohibition, who has time to make a fancy cocktail?

The Penrose
We hear the UES is gaining some much-needed street cred—they can thank The Penrose for that. The new hot spot boasts an impressive Irish menu like beer-battered McClure’s pickles ($5) that are a complete must-order and a 40-day cured spiced beef sandwich ($12). This joint is where beer and whiskey come to die but don’t forget about the homemade spiked sodas! The luck of the Irish is white hot so grab some grub and drink on the UES this fall to get warm when the temperature starts to drop.
The Penrose, 1590 2nd Ave. Bt. 82nd & 83rd Sts. (UES) 212.203.2751
Krescendo
This isn’t your average California Pizza Kitchen (not that there’s anything wrong with CPK!), this is one grand toast to Italy from Californians in NYC! "Top Chef Masters" contestant and chef and author, Elizabeth Falkner, is gearing up to take Brooklyn by storm. Falkner has been hard at work preparing pastas and salads such as Squid Ink Pasta along with different kinds of pizza. And let’s not forget about the drinks! The cocktails will be inspired by the boot-shaped country—what they’ll concoct? We won’t know until Krescendo opens but we do know this is one place we won’t be skipping out on this autumn.
Krescendo, 364 Atlantic Ave. Bt Bond & Hoyt Sts. (Boerum Hill) 718.330.0888
The Library at the Public Theater
The Public Theater is no stranger to drama…er, being that it’s a theater…but when someone like chef Andrew Carmellini opens a preshow lounge inside the landmark, New York gets drama and history and food and drinks all in one. The quadruple threat will boast an impressive menu that includes a seafood gumbo with andouille sausage and classic cocktails. The Library will open next month and we’re anticipating a will-be chic and sophisticated place to dine before (and after) being cultured at the theater.
The Library at the Public Theater, 425 Lafayette St. Bt. Astor Pl. & E 4th St. (East Village) 212.539.8777
