The Out of Towners

Clockwise from top left: McSorley's Old Ale House; Tao;
Coyote Ugly Saloon; Chumley's
It’s hard to explain exactly what separates New Yorkers from the rest of America, but when your grown-up friends from out of town show up wearing shorts and Disney shirts, you can forget about showing them Bungalow 8. The bars below might work.
Coyote Ugly Saloon: Your cousins from Cincinnati have seen the movie, now they want to see the real thing. The movie of course wasn’t shot here and there are several of these places around the nation, but who cares, so long as the barkeeps keep dancing on the counter.
Chumley’s: Yes, this used to be a speakeasy back in the day and it’s on a winding street most tourists can’t find. Surely that’ll make your visitors from Utah feel special. The 1920s vibe may even remind them of their hometown, which is 80 years behind Manhattan.
McSorley’s Old Ale House: Visitors wishing to see a genuine New York City artifact and still drink in the company of other out-of-towners will love the Big Apple’s oldest bar. Beer options are limited (two), but this place is about history, not selection.
Fraunces Tavern: Fraunces is where George Washington last tipped a mug to his troops before stumbling into history. There’s a museum attached to this joint, but it’s a history lesson in its own right.
Tao: By now, even the Midwest gets “Sex and the City,” if not as an idea then certainly in syndication. Tao is a bit played out to those of us here, but Aunt Lola will love it. (Remind her that the statue is Buddha and not Kojak.)
