Raclette at the Flea Market Café
131 Avenue A
East Village 212.358.9280
Raclette is a Swiss and French semi-firm cow’s milk cheese, but it’s also another communal cheese experience. In the tradition of fondue, friends gather ‘round the raclette grill to melt slices of the cheese until it is bubbling then pour it over boiled potatoes. Eat it with sides of dried meats, tart cornichons, and crusty bread. Add a glass of your favorite wine, and you have yourselves a party. Take note: You must be sitting at the bar of the Flea Market Café, not at a table, to order the raclette.
Pecorino Fondue at Craft Bar
900 Broadway (@ 20th St.)
Flatiron 212.461.4300
Don’t expect to get the traditional pot of cheese with spears and sides when you order this Craft Bar specialty. Instead, what you’ll get is a dish of broiled, crusty, lava-like Pecorino Romano cheese drizzled with honey and sprinkled with roasted hazelnuts and Pepperoncini and served with a side of chewy bread to dip into it. You won’t want to share but you should. Heaven on a plate!
