200 Orchard: 200 is your typical neighborhood Irish pub if you took away everything you’ve come to expect from Irish pubs—no orange, green and white motif, no kitschy wall décor, no drunken revelers shouting at an obscure rugby match. What you’re left with are bartenders (with delicious brogues) that know your name, a great selection of beers (the requisite Guinness, priced at $6, alongside some local brews like Blue Point and Six Point), and a cocktail list–including an $8 jalapeno infused margarita–that comes as a pleasant surprise. Rather than reopen as a wannabe lounge like their former incarnation (closed as they battled for permits), the owners decided to go the opposite route; walls that are either exposed brick or reclaimed barn wood, two massive chandeliers made of an old ConEd spool, Djs spinning an eclectic mix of tunes (no top40 here), a dimly lit private beer-hall in back and a large painting of Jimmy Hendrix in front (sigh, the only miss). In a hood that continues to get increasingly flashier (think: Red Velvet, THOR) it’s refreshing to see 200 has gone back to basics. |
