55 Bar:
Whether you’re a jazzphile or simply enjoy life’s guilty pleasures (read: Kenny G.), 55 Bar offers a casual opportunity to enjoy one of the oldest dives in New York City. This unassuming establishment dates back to the prohibition era—and it shows. Black and white photos of jazz’s late greats adorn nicotine-stained, paneled walls with wall sconces; an older crowd dominates this scene, where daily live performances play to a laid-back, enthusiastic audience. While the establishment officially observes a two-drink minimum, the easygoing servers don’t seem likely to lay down the law anytime soon. Drinks range from $4-$7.50; cover varies from $3-$10 depending on who’s playing that night. Open daily 4:30pm-4am.
This is a great space...Owner passed on and the new male owner/son has destroyed this club....there is never any booze on the shelf, back up shelves are empty and beer on taps are always out! It was a Friday night and us gals wanted just a simple house glass of red wine. I had to laugh out loud. They were out of red. We then asked for white wine needless to say there was no white wine either. We decided to finally ask for gin and vodka tonics..and the tonic was flat...okay! We did not hold it against the place. went back in the coming summer and they lost their liquor license...Okay we gave it a third try to hear some music and the third time was a wipe out also. Wanted shots of Patron with lime...turned out the Patron was watered down....so This place is finally off my list....When you sit in a bar and the owner comes over to you and tells you to HUSH! is not a nice way to treat your costumers. The Saturday bartender day time was a doll when the owner left she bought us a free round and also refused to take our tip. Told us to please return next week for some blues & shots. She( don't remember her name, but had beautiful red hair) did put us on her email list and has made up for the treatment somewhat. If this woman/Bartender is not on I would not take the time or effort to attend another 55bar outing Thanks for reading Linda Straton
