'Cesca:
Chef Tom Valenti has created an urban trattoria serving the best Southern Italian country cuisine in the city with ’Cesca. A roaring wood-burning oven is the room’s centerpiece, where everything from peppers to seafood to mushrooms are roasted. Have the latter with cheesy polenta for a highbrow presentation of a lowbrow Italian staple. Diners sit in circular velvet upholstered booths and order farmhouse-style meats like a lamb duo of grilled loin chop and lamb sausage with cauliflower stew, or squab glazed with honey. Hearty pasta dishes include homemade gnocchi–actually light and not mini stomach bombs like so many other places serve–with a ragout of braised veal. Wines from Sicily and the southern region of Puglia dominate the wine list. After dinner, try ’Cesca’s three-bitters tasting to prep the palate for creamy buttermilk panna cota with blood orange sauce for dessert.
