Despite the name, Above Allen is not just one of Soon-Yi Previn’s old tantric positions. The term also applies to the rooftop bar at the ritzy Thompson Hotel, and it’s one of the LES’s most exclusive drinking spots. With panoramic views of the city (and model-hot clientele), this is the sort of place that can get away with requiring membership cards. If you can manage to snag one, you will be rewarded with deck-ready signature drinks—like the $15 “yen-yen”, a refreshing mix of vodka, ginger liqueur and cucumber—to go with the incredible vistas. As for the décor, it's pretty spotty: the retractable roof certainly rocks, but the graffiti-and-camouflage furnishings will make you feel like you're sitting on ODB's old hoodie. That said, it's probably best you just take in the sights while standing on the roof—you didn’t come here to sit down anyway!
