Anfora: Ah, the Greeks. Not only did they invent civilization, but also anfora, the sexy curved vessels formerly used to store and transport wine. The West Village bar of the same name, however, is anything but ancient, touting wines from mainly organic, biodynamic and sustainable vineyards. Owned by the team that brought you Dell’ Anima (and conveniently located just two doors down), the subdued masculine space is refreshingly (gasp!) simple, complete with a long curvy bar and black leather banquettes to encourage mingling (or stealing bites off your date's plate). If the different wine varietals are all Greek to you, don’t panic, the friendly bartenders will happily pour you a taste from one of the twenty wines by the glass ($8-$16) including a smooth Lustau Solera Reserva Puerto Fino. But hey, if you are feeling nostalgic for the mid 2000’s, they are just as willing to serve up a $12 mixologist-worthy cocktail (no judgment here)! On any given night, you’re sure to spot dress shirt-wearing Villagers and the women who love them mingling about the warm, loud space in a democratic fashion. The Greeks would be proud of such advancement. |
