“One room, one oven,” claims the introduction on the menu at Apizz, a cozy and clean, if somewhat cramped Italian restaurant housed in a former Lower East Side sweatshop. The menu doesn’t lie, but it might more accurately state, “One room in an oven.” The enormous wood oven takes up 1/3 of the room, dominating the space and the food, both of which retain a rustic smoky flavor; the results can be a bit too medieval for some tastes. The low lighting and brick walls make for a warm atmosphere and the mega oven certainly adds to that vibe. However, it would be cozier, and cheaper to simply stay in your studio and heat things up with the oven that takes up most of your apartment. Open Mon.-Sat. 6-11pm.
