Ardesia: The name comes from the Italian word for slate (what?), but there's nothing drab about this Hell's Kitchen wine bar. In fact, with a name that evokes ambrosia, aphrodesia and Artemis (goddess of the hunt, of course) Ardesia is dedicated to sensuality...and owner Mandy Oser has that down pat. Aesthetically, the candlelight is about as low as you can go while still being able to read the menu, and the resulting romance factor is ultra-high wattage. The surrounding bar area has lots of small tables for friendly mixing, glancing, and all that might ensue. A cozy little corner den, decked out with plush mini sofas, is waiting for those who want to curl up with their vino and their date. Yes, as for the grape, wines are divided into "Old World" and "New World," just in case you’re on a voyage of discovery...you can feel safe ordering an unknown here (and there are plenty). If you're peckish, look to the menu (on a slate, of course) featuring a sophisticated roster of small bites (currently, a trio of charcuterie meat offerings and six cheeses, going for $5 per selection). Conclusion: If a visit to this place doesn't put you in the mood, it may be time to see your doctor.
