If you’re headed to Arlene’s Grocery, chances are you’re checking out a band, and whether it’s two dudes from your high school who nailed a gig there, or someone slightly more…legit, the venue is renowned, and for good reason. The institution is “intimate” which really does make it all the more charming, so whether you’re coming for a band or just for a drink (or four—PBRs are cheap!), you’ll definitely feel you got your money’s worth, even despite the cover charge. This LES-tination somehow embodies everything we all love to hate about the Lower East Side—namely hipsters, crowded spaces and lots of plaid—yet it somehow separates itself from fellow neighborhood haunts with a sense of authenticity. Bands perform every night, but take center stage yourself on Mondays and Fridays when you can karaoke your heart out…for free or $10 respectively.
