Arthur’s Tavern: You have to work an extra shift just to afford the steep cover charge most jazz clubs ask for. But at the cover-less Arthur’s Tavern, you can save your money for ordering beers and tipping the bartender. The hallowed stomping grounds of Charlie Parker and Roy Hargrove still rocks the casbah in its old age, catering to an eclectic audience: Don’t be surprised if you’re bopping your head to a raucous set alongside college students, drag queens, and seasoned jazzphiles. Any night of the week, performers like the six-piece Grove Street Stompers, a fixture for more than 40 years, fill the dark, smoky small space with jazz, blues, and Dixieland. It’s one of the few places left where you can enjoy good music and good company without spending a dime. Open Sun.-Mon. 8pm-4am and Tue.-Sat. 7pm-4am.
