Bahr Che:
While it shares part of its name with one of history's most famed rabble rousers, there is nothing revolutionary about this Astor Place wine bar. Taller than it is wide, the main decorative elements are wall-to-wall shelves filled with 1,500 wine bottles, though the overly dark lighting makes them hard to see. Your best opportunity to scan the labels comes while waiting in line for the single restroom located awkwardly at the hub of the kitchen. Nevertheless, a wine bar has to have wine, and thus is always worth a visit. Selections were chosen from around the globe and while most are pricey, you can save yourself from being relegated to a St. Mark’s college dive for the rest of the evening by ordering half-carafe servings. Pair a Bordeaux or a South African Riesling with the typical cheese-and-charcuterie ($9-16) wine bar selections, or risk a bit more adventure with the black truffle and lobster mac-n-cheese ($16). And that, is about as adventurous as things get around Bahr Che.
