Bao Noodles:
Nowadays restaurants with the word “Bao” in it are a plenty— Baotique, BaoHaus, Baorito—but to understand where our city’s obsession came from, you need to travel to one of the first Bao’s on the block—Bao Noodles. There you’ll find the familiar Bahn Mi and Pho mixed with some more obscure traditional Vietnamese fare (try the Iron Pot Chicken—braised ginger boneless chicken and quail egg cooked in an iron pot, $13.95), but there's more going on at this Gramercy hideaway than just the eats…like the incredible sake program. It helps that the owner is a certified sake sommelier and has put together a diverse list to pair with the menu. Sake rookies can ease into the beverage with one of their crisp saketini’s (try the Cucumber Rosemary—with cucumber-infused sake, Absolut and a salt rim) or take down a sake infused with everything from watermelon to grapefruit. Beer drinkers should come early and take advantage of their Chang happy hour, which scores you five Chang beers and their Salt and Pepper Squid appetizer for $11.95.
