Whether you consider a strict bar dress code to be an anachronism, implied racism (really, no Timberlands?) or just a pain in the ass, you’ll have to grin and bear it to enjoy the spoils at Bar 21. The new casual lounge at the historic 21 Club finally gives cheapskates an opportunity to check out the classy digs, but be advised that jeans and sneakers are strictly verboten. A throwback to the Mad Men and Sweet Smell of Success era includes relaxed lighting, comfortable high-back wing chairs and plush couches to foster laid-back celebrity watching. Quietly acknowledge old-fashioned stars (“Hey, it’s Jackie Mason!”) while sipping flawlessly prepared Old-Fashioneds ($15). Bar 21 actually offers beer (a first for the club, $8-$9) along with the same award-winning wine list as the rest of the venue. Their “bar bites” forgo usual options like chicken wings in favor of upscale eats like spicy veal meatballs ($11) and steak tartar ($18). With Bar 21, the less-than-elite and maybe-kinda-broke finally get their chance to feel old-time fancy, too—as long as they don’t wear their Nikes.
