Bar Basque: If Bar Basque was indeed going for a “futuristic” look to their restaurant/lounge space in the Eventi Hotel, they succeeded—if we are talking about the 1980s “future” a la TRON and Blade Runner (shocker-the films' set designer Syd Mead is responsible for the decor). The lounge features red-bathed walls, black and white geometric furniture, and spaceship-inspired light fixtures straight out of the Jetsons. While the bar/lounge space is a bit overwhelming, the glass-walled dining area is as sleek and contemporary as any modern art-museum café.Unfortunately, while nibbling at the small plates of Baby Lamb Chops or Crispy Suckling Pig Potato, at least half of your party will be staring out those glass walls at a jumbotron playing either the Knicks game or strange graphics. Your best bet is to pass up the miniscule tapas for a gin cocktail or the Smokey Roca Margarita (Patron Silver, orange liqueur, aged whiskey, fresh lime juice and agave nectar served with a smoked salt ring, $14). Or, lounge on a leather chaise and choose a Spanish wine from the wall-length wine fridge available for tasting in 1oz, 3oz or 6oz pours. Then, get out of there and go west to Hell’s Kitchen, where the real future is dining. |
