Bar on Fifth: Hotel bars have become unrecognizable as of late, with the latest crop disguising themselves as futuristic spaceships (Bar Basque), 1920s jazz dens (Salon Millesime) or Art Deco supper clubs (Lamb's Club). Then there's Bar on Fifth, a hotel bar all dressed up as a...hotel bar. Located behind a wall of glass on the ground floor of the brand-new Setai, Bar on Fifth pulls off a sophisticated, yet unintimidating atmosphere, embracing both investment banker happy hours and khaki-clad tourists. The lack of over-the-top décor or an unpronounceable menu allows for that mixed crowd, albeit a crowd able to spend at minimum $14 on a cocktail—try the “Moscow Mule” made with Russian Standard Vodka, signature ginger beer and lime, $16. The arrangement of plush lounge chairs creates opportunities for intimacy without taming down a lively bar scene. Carefully arranged stacks of coffee-table books, a mini-sculpture here and there, and finger bowls of candied nuts make Bar on Fifth relaxed enough for a daytime cocktail, and a perfect excuse for a mid-day shopping break, tourist or not.
