Bar Paya:
Remember when the East Village was known for graffiti and counterculture dives like theMars Bar? Now, the only thing pointing to “counter” in this neighborhood are the wine lists that have origins south of the equator. Representing the viticulture of Peru is Bar Paya, brought to you by the owners of its next door neighbor, the aptly-named Winebar. Like its contemporaries, Paya’s muted palette, minimal design and elevator music scream '90s bachelor pad, so don’t be surprised if you find Patrick Bateman-types swarmed by young girls batting their eyelashes. The open-air entryway allows for more than just the wine to breathe, even when the place is packed to the brim with the swanky uptowners who finally have an excuse to travel south of 23rd street. The extensive wine list is paired with the bar’s namesake payas, a flatbread made from corn and potato (all the food offerings range from $6-$18), but if you really want to be authentic sip on one of their Pisco cocktails. The Serena Libra, a blend of Pisco and Papaya Juice, is definitely the exception to the rule that designates ordering a cocktail at a wine bar a faux pas.
