BarBao: Bao down. This new Vietnamese oasis is the answer to the UWS’s request for cool. A sleek yet rustic space – low lighting, wrought iron fixtures, and plank wood ceilings– is handsome and romantic, but the food is anything but refined. The Daikon duck hash ($12) topped with an egg is downright hearty and the whole red snapper ($27), although scary-looking, is a kick in the pants (a.k.a. spicy and delicious). And for the lushes just wanting to juice up on cocktails at the bar, there are 10 specialty cocktails in addition to the basic, a vodka martini made just the way you like it. With grey cozy banquettes, dishes made to share, and a curtained off corner for intimate birthday dinners, this is a place to bring your friends.
