Beba SoHo: SoHo is one of New York City's best examples of irony: it's probably the hippest neighborhood we've got but no one wants to go there because of the crowds of tourists who swarm it. Fortunately, Beba, a still-undiscovered haven on Spring Street, has arrived on the scene. With floral wallpaper and old-school flower-shaped light fixtures, there's a vaguely '60s vibe going on. The hippie-dippie feel sharply contrasts of-the-minute cocktails, like a "Beba Martini" made with organic raspberries and St. Gemain liqueur, or the “Guilty Pleasure," with Frangelico, Blue Curacao, lime juice and sparkling wine (both $14). The décor is blatantly feminine, but the plush leather banquettes cry men's club as if the designers were going for a bar interpretation of Mars and Venus meet for non-committal play. After a few cocktails, take a spin down the spiral staircase and check out the basement lounge, it’s an ideal spot to cozy up to Mr. Right or Mr. Right Now. With decadent small plates courtesy of Chef Tom Papoutisis, Beba provides a welcome escape from the crowds after an afternoon shoving, er, shopping on Broadway. Then again, with entrees ranging from $19-$36, the tourists may be the only ones able to afford it! |
