Bell Book & Candle: Those seeking healthy, local fare shouldn’t judge this quaint, dimly-lit West Village spot by its cover—although its food program focuses on local, organic, sustainable and overall responsibly procured foods, healthful dining options are few and far between. Despite the restaurant’s 60 rooftop aeroponic towers (that keep the kitchen stocked with hyper-local, fresh produce), there are very few dishes on the menu that boast herbs, fruits or vegetables as the stars. That said, the comfort-food fare delivers for its price—and lets face it, most people would take crispy fried oysters over a plate of veggies, no matter how fresh they are. Plus, given the relatively unobtrusive noise level and typical West Village ambiance in this casual eatery, it’s a fitting spot for groups or a date night by the books.
