Bier International: Birra, Cervesa, Kongo—the words for beer in various languages splashed across one wall blatantly advertise the concept behind Harlem's new "beer garden," lest the name be too subtle for your wits. Bier International delivers the communal tables, sausages, and promised selection of diverse brews needed for the "beer garden" moniker, in an indoor space that seems Euro, if not exactly international. A retractable front wall, bright lighting and selection of coffees adds an element of open-air cafe, reinforced by a regular set of students on laptops. While the alcoholic offerings are confined to beer and wine, the more adventurous can evade beer-boredom with the “Bierlini” (Fruli strawberry beer and prosecco, $8). A clean, minimalist style and electronic music begs the attention of the twenty-something globetrotters who have been invading the hostels de Harlem in recent years. Of course, with no happy hour and beer prices that rival a night in a four-bunk ($8 for a Duvel half-pint), they are likely to drag their backpacks elsewhere. |
