Bierhaus NYC: Three veterans of notable Manhattan joints with animals in their name (Bull’s Head, Black Bear Lodge, Mad Dog & Beans) have made their first foray into the German beer house, er, bierhaus scene. The spot’s also known as Hofbrau Bierhaus, because, well, Hofbrau products are literally all that are served on the twenty-four taps in the joint—try any of their six varieties ranging from the original Lager to the Hefe Weizen, available in several over-sized formats. With all this drinking, there needs to be something to sop it up, and Bierhaus NYC has the standards (pretzel, $4; bratwurst, $13), but also some unexpected eats (pear endive salad, $12) and a large dessert menu. Sporting a relaxed and fun atmosphere, Bierhaus offers communal picnic table seating, an immense balcony and a glass ceiling that makes the place seem even larger. Just be warned: after a few too many steins, you may find yourself dreamily staring upward and trying to chat up the handsome devil looking down at you.
