Bill's Gay Nineties:
Travel the few steps down from the street into this tongue-in-cheek tavern, and you’ll feel like you’re taking a trip back in time. In the 1920s, Bill’s was one of the area’s swingingest speakeasies, and not much has changed in the interim. You can still chill with some of Manhattan’s coolest seniors and sample from the fairly standard bar menu in the dark and ancient-feeling downstairs bar area. Old portraits of forgotten pugilists and long-since put-down race horses dot the walls. At night, a piano player takes over the joint and regales diners with old-school melodies. Upstairs, there’s more of a cabaret feel, and a more extensive menu to choose from while you listen to the tunes. Classy, moody, and unique, Bill’s is a real character for those who can’t get enough of their Golden Girls.
