Birreria Roma:
Melding two annoying Manhattan trends of late—speakeasy-style entry and beer gardens—with, er, Italian cuisine brings us Birreria Roma. Associated with Pizza Roma but entered through its own hidden side door (marked only with a small sign and phone number) on Cornelia Street, you best jot down that number as reservations are required for entry. Thankfully, the hidden space is a relaxing, open-air environment. Unthankfully, the beers are fairly boring corporate options like Heineken and Moretti ($6), but Pizza Roma’s wonderful one or two-person pies, with more standards options like marina and margherita all the way up to Tartufina w/ Truffle & Fontina cheese and Patate w/ Potato & cheese ($12.50-$36) balance out the standard suds. The beer’s fine and the pizza’s great, but the location is a bigger pain in the ass than need be!
