Bizaare Avenue Cafe: The recent morphing of Studio Square’s Cup Diner into Bizaare Avenue Cafe is, as the name would suggest, just bizarre. Cup was never our favorite place in Astoria (see Café Bar for that), but for standard American-style brunch, this place served its purpose. So what to make of the semi-makeover? The old tiled floor and ‘50s Americana posters remain, but they now share space with fancy chandeliers, rugs and country-inspired furniture, all of which is for sale. Thus, a bizarre bazaar, complete with a menu that is no less odd to behold. From Spanish tapas ($7-$8) to Carolina BBQ pulled pork ($9) to a full sushi bar (about $5-6 per piece, or $24 for deluxe), this place aims to cater to many tastes. Whatever your pleasure, wash it down with a Bizaare Punch or Bizaare Mojito ($10), which, despite the names, are easily the least outlandish aspects of this place. Just don’t expect to meet up with someone to join you on that newly acquired red velvet love seat—despite its prime (for Astoria) location, Bizaare tends to be bizarrely empty. |
