Blackbird's Bar & Restaurant:
Blackbird recently went through a Holy Day identity crisis: Football vs. brunch. Football won. Deeming it impossible to mix two distinct tribes of bar-goers (NFL fanatics and Eggs Benedict fanatics) brunch—despite great word-of-mouth about the food—was relegated to Saturdays. Now that it’s the off-season, the double-duty meal has reclaimed its rightful place on the weekly calendar, but the incident says a lot about what kind of bar Blackbird wants to be. The flat screens flickering with ESPN. The dart games going in the back. The latest Grammy nominees blasting on the digital jukebox. It’s hard not to think of it as a little bit of Murray Hill transplanted to Astoria...but is there anything wrong with that? For many people in the neighborhood—especially those with day jobs—Blackbird hits that perfect sweet spot: a casual local sports bar that’s by no means a dump. And yes, a football place...not a fútbol place.
