Bravest:
You won’t need bravery to enter this Murray Hill dive—the heaps of fire-fighting clientele and FDNY-affiliated staff for which the joint is named will welcome you like a regular. The menu is surprisingly tasty, featuring riffs on your usual bar grub like the Crank Melt (chicken melt with bacon, $8) and the Firehouse Burger (cheddar cheese, raw onion, jalapeno sauce and fresh jalapenos, $9). But as with any good industry fave, the real draw at this joint is the 4-7pm happy hour that lets patrons drink nearly free ($2 drafts, say what!?). Don’t sweat it if you can’t make it in time—beers are just $2-$6 during regular hours, or you can snag one of the best brew deals in the city: a bucket of 6 beers for $15. The tiny interior is as modest and intimate as the relationships you’ll make around the bar—we recommend trying to stoke the fire with one of New York’s bravest.
