Burger & Barrel: When you hear the name “Burger and Barrel,” images of a greasy spoon dive littered with peanut shells are likely to come to mind. But since this is Manhattan, and more importantly SoHo, the B&B they are referring to is quite the opposite (beef carpaccio, anyone?). Lure Fishbar’s John McDonald, Josh Pickard, and chef Josh Capon's new venture in the former Centovini space most resembles an all-American gastropub (not an oxymoron). The classy diner-esque space is masculine enough to welcome true burger fiends without alienating their permanent “I’m on a diet” sidekicks who are craving a chopped salad (low-fat dressing on the side, please!). SoHo locals in dire need of a...well, local spot, pack the comfortably crowded green banquet booths and round tables, sipping on wine off tap from the Brooklyn-produced barrel (aha!) program that uses grapes from the North Fork of Long Island. And if you happen to be sipping the suds all by your lonesome, make sure to snag a spot by the window for prime outdoor viewing of single cinemaphiles headed to the Angelika. Invite them in for a sip from the barrel and who knows, suddenly you may need a table for two. |
