Cafe Gitane @ The Jane Hotel:
There's an old restaurant slogan that you can't eat atmosphere. That may be, but you sure can get high on it. With vaulted ceilings, dangling ceiling fans, pastel walls, and a marble tiled floor, the new Cafe Gitane looks like a French aristocrat's oasis in the Merzouga Sahara. The only thing missing is a waif to fan you with a palm leaf, but have no fear: owners Luc Levy and Robert Padilla (of Minetta Tavern, Balthazar and Pastis fame) will probably add that amenity soon. Until then, leave the camel home, put on a clean shirt and play out your colonial supremacist fantasy. With Moroccan couscous plates at $11.50 and eggplant tapenade for $12.50, the pricing feels very colonial outpost as well— you'll be tossing spare change at the help in no time. Now open for dinner.
I second Sally's review. Cafe Gitane's a gem of a spot. Great food + atmosphere...also bring my laptop to work from time to time, as there's free wifi.

Just opened a few blocks from my apartment, and decided to give it a shot for breakfast. Fantastic! Good service, food was wonderful and will definetly be back.
