Cascabel: Even something as no-frills as a taqueria joint ends up getting frills once you hit the UES. Thus, even as you order at a counter at Cascabel, you get tacos pimped out with house-made chorizo, stone crab and natural hanger steak, with heritage pork belly leading off as an app. So, you won't exactly mistake it for that one night in Tijuana, but, with ultra-fresh, delicious Mexican fare for taco truck prices, Cascabel's still closer to real Mexican than most other places in the nabe. A decent wine list accompanies Mexican beers, but the lack of margaritas will make for some sad senoritas. And if you're in the mood for the merry sounds of a mariachi band, too bad. You'll get a taste of some authentic Dave Matthews instead. Thus, we still no comprendo on the Luche libre theme that's laid on thick like guac, but we're here for the food, and besides, the friendly staff hasn't attempted to put us in a headlock (yet). |
