Cava
Let's get right to the point: This is a place to take your folks. After all, you're going to be looking for a place to sit after your visit to the Museum of Natural History...and a lot of these other Amsterdam Ave. joints are pretty frat-tastic. Since ma and dad might not be in the mood for jello shots (okay, maybe dad is), this spot offers have an inviting area for a healthy glass of something Spanish ($9-15) and a nibble of Caribbean. Accordingly, the place isn't exactly Cava-nous. Instead, it's cozy with many of the familiar wine bar trappings: low lighting, sprinkled seating, small bar (no liquor here) and adorned ceiling, all permeated with music playing slightly-too-loudly. The good news is that the staff is amicable, which means you won't have to hear the "snotty waiter" story every time you return home for the holidays. If you aren’t so keen on wine, make sure you're with someone who is (like your mom). And most of all, relax: After a few plates and a decent bottle, you can escape down the street for a shot of Jäger...actually, better make it a double.

I'm surprised by the review here .. have had great service there and the food is amazingly good .. I like the short wine list .. its bigger than Vin71 .. which is pricey and packed ..the space at Cava is nice ! I will continue to go back .. also a great date place .. oh by the way I am not related or have any interests in the place

I went a few Sat ago with my husband. Granted, the wine list was short on the affordable side and a few were recently "out," but all and all we'll def go back. It's a nyse place to go for a glass or two to chill and not have to play pole-position at some rowdy dump on Amsterdam.

This place was really, really bad. I've lived in NYC for a long time and have actually never written a review before, and I am completely compelled to warn people not to go here. Obviously whoever wrote the other review is someone affiliated with the place.
So I decided to meet my friend there on a Monday night, it was very quiet when I got there. For a wine bar, the list of wines is awful, most bottles are over $100, and the list is short. We sat down and ordered a glass of wine, they were out of it so they offered another one, forgot to bring it over so we had to remind our waiter, that being said, there's like 5 people in the place. Short pour on the wine.
Then we ordered a couple of their small plates, one of which had goat fillet on it, they were out of the goat fillet so he offered a veggie dish and said it would have brussels, asparagus, squash, onions, it would be great. We also ordered the meatball on a portobello, and the skirt steak.
The service sucked, we asked for everything including waters and silverware.
The food came out and that "Veggie dish" was a pile of sliced peppers and onions with 2 asparagus, a quarter of a corn cob, and ketchup dollops on either side, hahha. Then, that meatball was disgusting, hard as a rock over a portabello that was still frozen and cold in the center like they microwaved it, and the skirt steak was two tiny strips of steak smothered in this awful sauce that was one step away from a Mc Donalds BBQ packet.
The waiter came over and asked if we wanted the check and how everything was, and I politely told him it might have been the worst meal I've ever eaten in NY and for him to recommend that veggie dish was ridiculous. He could care less and then charged us $13 for the thing.
Anyway, there's much better places to eat around there, go to Bar Bao instead or Wine & Roses. This place will just make you mad.
