Alphabet City’s got quite a past, but the neighborhood is now as swanky as it was gritty. Case in point: China 1 Restaurant & Lounge, a sleek spot which prepares authentic dishes with fresh ingredients and house-made sauces. Pair that goodness with intoxicatingly beautiful and potent cocktails like the pomegranate martini ($9) or sake. Exposed brickwork, plush carpeting, and antique Chinese furniture make this the perfect place to act like an emperor, complete with bottle service in pillowed booths. China 1’s happy hour runs Monday through Friday (5:30pm-7:30pm) with sake bombs ($6 each or two for $10) and specials on beers, shots, and well drinks. Plus, for $25, from 9pm-midnight, Sunday through Friday, the booze wont stop flowing. And if you're in need of a private party, the downstairs lounge has a live DJ and holds up to 200. It all adds up to a lavish taste of the Orient on Avenue B.
