Choptank
We like our seafood restaurants like we like our seafood: fresh. Named after the river that connects the Atlantic to the Chesapeake, Choptank Restaurant is a bit of the Old Bay in the heart of the West Village. Come, peel, and enjoy the restaurant's in-house dining bar that boasts East and West Coast oysters. For an outdoor affair, sit on the outside patio where veiled curtains flow gently in the wind, reminiscent of a lazy, gorgeous Sunday by the Bay. Supplement the carefree affair with a Light and Mildly Inclement (Diplomatico Rum, Ginger Beer, Lime. $12) or a Sunday Morning Call (Hendricks Gin, St. Germain, Dolin Blanc Vermouth, Fee Brothers Grapefruit Bitters, $14). The great thing about Choptank is that you'll get a feel for the Chesapeake—without losing your land-feet. The only sea-sickness to be had here is from eating one too many oysters.

Should be called chumstank.

We tried choptank tonight, the service was good ... however the flaws were plenty.
After the overly salted and spiced chips (a ploy to sell more drinks?) I wouldn't have another beer.
Our appetizers arrived promptly and hot... The fish sticks appeared to be whiting, $5.00 would get you a bigger serving of fried whiting almost anywhere. The shrimp tacos might have been more memorable had they been plated with the slaw on the side! Raw, cold soft tortilla AND slaw? What a way to ruin the very tasty fried mini rock shrimp. I moved three (half) of the pea sized shrimp to the second tortilla and tried without the slaw, not bad. The sauce was red and watery slightly sweet and vinegary, did not improve the taste at all.
Our entrees were the crab cake with potato salad, and the striped bass with artichoke stew, "bagno caudo". The crab cake was the best thing so far, though, like most northern crabcakes there was only one per serving. The "potato salad" consisted of halved, cold, boiled potatoes smothered with a sauce that tasted like mayo with mustard powder stirred in... inedible!
The striped sea bass was broiled to a crisp black skin on top (the burnt skin was the only edible part)
This treatment rendered the rest of the filet over- boiled and chewy. I could eat less than half. The "artichoke strew" consisted of a watery broth with chopped carrots and celery, the taste of totally overwhelmed any flavor the artichoke may have had.
On a scale of one to ten...
overall. 4
The food was mostly bland and even overcooked. The Maryland themed menu was NOT EVEN CLOSE. No hush puppies, No crab cakes... only crab cake. No fresh clams? What about biscuits? Michael
