Cienfuegos: Whether you enter from a vintage phone booth or an underground taqueria (or in this case, a white wrought-iron gate), unassuming joints housing sexy drinking haunts are still the rage. Enter Cienfuegos, the new Cuban rum bar brought to you by Ravi DeRossi (Death & Co.) sitting above its sister sandwich spot Carteles. Within the playfully decorated (and slightly kitsch) vintage Havana-style lounge, rum drinkers will be blown away by the two dozen punch cocktails available in four sizes and served in decorative punch bowls (beware of prom flashbacks). The servers, dressed in costumey getups (yep, straw hats and all) are as laid-back as the island drinks they idly serve, but no problemo, you can wait, right? Besides, after a few sips of concoctions like the 13 (a light strawberry/pineapple Smith & Cross blend) or the 6 Toe Punch (inspired by Ernest Hemmingway’s six-toed feline), you'll be singing "yo-ho" in no time. Although a tad gimmicky, the warmly-lit lounge will impress date-goers in need of a break from gothic-like cocktail haunts, and since most patrons won’t be vacationing in Cuba anytime soon (legally that is), Cienfuegos is a more than adequate alternative. |
