Connie O's:
A hip Greenpoint bar on industrial ol’ Norman Avenue? Uh…no. Connie O’s has nothing in common with the achingly trendy bars nearer the Williamsburg border, but, then again, you probably didn’t expect to stumble upon an authentic Irish pub in the middle of a predominately Polish neighborhood, either. But that’s exactly what you get at Connie O’s: an unassuming neighborhood pub where the patrons care more about community than cool. The average age at Connie’s, which displays its Irish pride on the painted green bricks on the bar’s exterior walls, is pushing middle-aged, but they don’t much mind when good-looking young’uns stop in for a beverage. In fact, there are even videogames and a pool table to keep the kids busy while the “adults” go about their business.
I stopped by this bar early this morning, around 1am to use the ladies room and as I walked out a patron called me a nigger bitch. Not one person in the bar flinched not even as the guy and his friends proceeded to chase after me. I was in complete shock and felt like I was in a scene from a movie based on Jim Crow times.
