Cooper Square Hotel Bar:
Scrutinized for its location (in that out-of-place, 21-story glass building on Astor Place), The Second Floor Bar at the Cooper Square Hotel proves that bright W-Hotel slickness can feel pretty freakin' outta-place in dingy old New York City. But, give 'em credit: The place at least makes some attempt to blend in with its surroundings, with certain NYC design elements (stained wooden floors and our favorite leather banquettes) mingling amidst candle-lit cocktail tables and a charming bookcase fit for an art dealer's loft. Throw in a view more panoramic than you'd expect from a mere two floors above ground, and you might not even mind shelling out $14 for your Basil 8 (vodka, white grapes, mint, ginger ale). Besides, if California hotel bar chic really bothered you that much, why did you spend all fall trying to get into the Boom Boom Room?
