Copacabana Supper Club:
Once “the hottest club north of Havana”—at least in Barry Manilow’s estimation—the ever-relocating Copa has found its most recent home in Times Square. This new four-floor extravaganza is glitzy in the Dave & Buster’s sense, with a full-time “gourmet” restaurant, a club featuring Copa Dancers and Latin music nightly, and a top-story, glass-enclosed roofdeck for weekend brunches or after-work cocktails. Alex Garcia’s Nuevo-Latin food is actually quite good and, while the overpriced drinks are nothing special ($12 margaritas—boo!), they are not the reason why people flock to this place—here, it’s all about the dancing. With more posted rules and warning signs than a construction site (oddly enough, “construction boots” are expressly verboten), it might not seem worth it to venture in, but the club is one of the best spots in town for mass-scale salsa dancing. Ol’ Barry probably won’t be singing any updated paeans to the new Copa, but there’s still something about it that sorta feels iconic.
