Crown:
It’s always interesting when Downtowners move Uptown, especially when they have that je-ne-sais-quoi South-of-14th-Street pedigree. Such is the case with John DeLucie (chef and partner of the famed Lion in Greenwich Village and founding chef of Waverly Inn) who now brings his “regal” wares more northerly. With Crown, he presents his take on “New” New York-American cuisine in a tres chic 1920s townhouse, fitted with art deco ceilings, a zinc bar with velvet chairs, and a cozy fireplaced dining room that overlooks the neighboring homes of people that can actually afford to dine at Crown. The chef cranks out upscale seasonal fare like tuna Niçois ($29) and champagne vichyssoise ($27) and surely other foods that end with a lot of esses. To boot, there are mixologist-approved cocktails ($13), sommelier-selected wines, and even a dedicated pastry chef serving up massive popovers and other “refined” French desserts such as the apple degustation ($11). The Upper East Side may not be hip (or affordable), but your tastebuds will have the time of their lives!
