Dakota Bar:
Though named after the nearby apartment building made famous as John Lennon’s final stomping ground, the Dakota Bar is more fit for a modern socialite than a rock ’n roller. Frequented by tailored thirty-something women and older men, its whimsical décor -- featuring chandeliers fashioned out of brass instruments, warm cream and red color scheme, and upbeat music -- is claustrophobically stuffy. Alternatively inviting in its brightly lit interior and off-putting in its heavily blinded windows, the Dakota Bar’s mood is ambivalent, at best. With over 150 wines ($10 – 20/glass), plus inventive wine-based cocktails ($15-20) and old-fashioned sugary concoctions such as the Pink Squirrel (crème de noyaux, white crème de cacao, and light cream), the Dakota Bar’s drink list is artfully chosen. Prepare yourself to face the slightly pretentious clientele and expensive prices for the opportunity to sample the Dakota Bar’s well-crafted creations.
