Decibel:
If you’re craving a trip to the Orient, head over to Decibel and just say sake—they’ve got over 80 kinds. Shochu, that hip new Asian alcohol which is pretty much the equivalent of vodka, has hipsters turning Japanese. The spirits at Decibel are almost a religion—the staff delights in explaining the subtleties of sake, while the exotic spirits just sneak up on you, and before you know it, you’re drunk. The undersized digs have a rock ’n’ roll feel; this place is true to its East Village roots and isn’t sucking up to anyone. The tasty Japanese fare and gritty vibe has drinkers throwing back signature saketinis while chewing the fat with their trendy friends.
It's a somewhat mysterious, low-key kind of place, but this East Village izakaya is one of a kind. Good for a date or a drink with a great sake list.

Jason S. says:
I don’t know if it’s the narrow basement stairs, the makeshift curtain greeting your entrance, or the almost-cramped candlelit room filled with dark wood tables, but Decibel makes this Midwestern white guy feel like a Tokyo hipster.
If you’re in the mood to insult Decibel’s fine-tuned authenticity, I recommend sake bombs, and lots of ‘em. But remember, your waitress will know what you’re trying to order, so it will take some crafty convincing to get all the necessary glassware.
