Deity:
No need to sneak a flask into this church—instead of praying for the spirit, here you pay for the spirits. One look at the thick bar menu offering a slew of house cocktails ($10-$14), whiskeys, wine, and beer, and you know this converted synogogue is all about temptation. Deity’s dramatic space—from the front gates to the hexagonal bar to the gorgeous stained-glass windows—was custom-created by local artists to embody the club’s spiritual theme. But like most houses of worship these days, Deity has a hard time getting people in the door. Perhaps that’s why they’ve recruited hip-hop legend Ali Shaheed (A Tribe Called Quest) as resident DJ on Thursdays. Roll into this lounge in the middle of Boerum Hill (a.k.a. nowhere) with a date or a group of friends, and you might find yourself drinking the Kool-Aid. Open Thu.-Sat., 7pm-4am.
I love this spot to death. Fridays rock. They have hip hop and top 40 but manage to not be ghetto. I know, that's impossible, but it's a miracle they've made happen. Crazy cool bouncers, hip and hot waitresses, crazy cool staff and the owner will introduce himself to you (and his wife!). Think of it as an intelligent Lisa Bonet meets Neptunes meets Outcast meets... Ashley Simpson. Yes, it makes no sense yet makes perfect sense. Not to mention if you're a girl who thinks going out MUST involve taking pics, they've got amazing pieces of art, brick walls, etc (it used to be a synagogue). Don't believe me? Check out Gossip Girl Jessica Szhor's Complex magazine shoot. Yep, it was done here.
