Desmond's:
Not to be confused with the quintessential Manhattan dive—Desmond's Tavern on Park Avenue—just Desmond's is an intentionally pretentious Upper East Side gastropub. Serving classic American food with a British artiness (its co-owners are two British expats), Desmond's is a gorgeous spot meant more for a nice meal and elegant evening than a place to booze till sunrise. Set in a bit of a dead-zone part of town, its main clientele are locals and, if you are such a local, you probably have the coin to afford Desmond's pricey but delicious food (Beef Wellington for two, $28 per person) and pricey but well-chosen bottles of wine. Situated in a stunning townhouse (a former bank back in the 1920s), the wide-open floor with picture windows and a pearl-white vaulted ceiling create a unique experience in such a cramped city. Throw in a roomy mezzanine with a fireplace and large backyard garden, and it's well worth a quick visit, even if you can only pony up for a Lemon Tart and a single glass of Ponzi Pinot Noir 2008.
