Diablo Royale Este:
Tequila, Te-kill-ya is a common reaction when one thinks of the popular Mexican spirit (enter foggy flashbacks of foam parties in Cancun). But Diablo Royale Este, the new sister restaurant to the popular West Village joint, is more sophisticated-speakeasy than spring break destination (no whistles in sight). The décor is “Dia de la Muerte” meets Mexican saloon (we half-expected Salma Hayek to pop out as a sex-crazed zombie), filled with antler chandeliers, red leather seats and hundreds of Mexican Catholic candles (practically a prerequisite for sophisticated Mexicans these days). But unlike other upscale tequila bars where patrons feel pressured to know the difference between a reposado and an anejo, the unpretentious bartenders at DRE serve up unintimidating margaritas including a blood orange (light and refreshing) and a spicy mango (unique and fiery) at $10 a pop. A downstairs lounge, sunny patio in back and large bar in front means that both tattooed hipsters and advertising exes are free to enjoy “Ricky’s” (a margarita/beer hybrid) in a democratic fashion—no wet t-shirts in sight.
