Dick & Jane's: Hiding behind wooden garage doors, in the former home of The Hideout, lies a cozy yet slick cocktail haven. Dick & Jane’s is an intimate lounge dominated by a lacquered wooden bar lined with locals, with an ornate tin ceiling overhead. Dim, candle-lighting creates the perfect atmosphere for a "just drinks" first date, but makes it a bit difficult to read the lengthy cocktail menu. No bother—the welcoming bar staff will be happy to recommend one from the 50+ strong list, and the specialty cocktails from top-class mixologist Charlotte Voisey are well worth your strained sight. The interestingly named imbibing options run the gamut from the Whiskey Fig Fizz (15-year aged Glenfiddich, fig jam, angostura bitters, egg whites, fresh lemon and simple syrup, $12) and the Snow Mosquito (Reyka vodka, blueberries, fresh lime, mint leaves and blueberry simple syrup, $12). Though populated by locals, it has a sleeker feel than your average neighborhood bar and avoids the overcrowding and pretension of some of its city-based competitors. Predictably, prices are on the high side, but the well-crafted cocktails, the company and the quarters are truly worth the toll and for Manhattanites, the trek.
