Dominie's Hoek: Cartoon lovers will recognize Hoek as the last name of Ren, the high-strung, angry Chihuahua from Ren & Stimpy. Dominie’s Hoek, though, is the complete opposite: laid back, friendly and effortlessly cool. Not bad for a Long Island City bar, which transcends a run-of-the-mill Irish Pub vibe with a colorful lighting scheme, edgy art and one of the most legit indie rock jukeboxes around. To top it off, the pub menu—long on casual chow staples like burgers and burritos—not-so-humbly boasts the “best chicken sandwich in the neighborhood.” But in reality, Dominie’s has no further ambition than to be the solid, go-to, local spot where you can hang with friends, have an actual conversation with your $5 beer-and-a-shot and enjoy the 365-day-a-year outdoor porch. In an era where fancy bars are steadily seeping into every neighborhood in town, Dominie’s lack of pretention is another reminder that Queens can be cool on its own terms. |
