Don Hill's: Don Hill's, the much-hyped SoHo music venue, does an entertaining job of conjuring the down-and-dirty punk clubs of NYC glory days gone by...the kind of club they once were. Gigantic posters of nude women on all fours, graffiti-sprayed walls, and the overpowering stench of dry ice in the air certainly draws a more interesting crowd than the typical downtown club opening. Goths, scenesters, fashionistas, punk wannabes and the old guard of the underground manage to mingle harmoniously under a united banner of mainstream-pop rejection. But the meathead in the CBGB t-shirt fist-pumping his eight-dollar Budweiser near the merchandise table is the clue that Don Hill's former grittiness has been replaced with a fabricated kind. While you can recreate décor and maybe even an attitude, it's more difficult to recreate that unmistakable punk perfume of blood, piss and sex—the one that tends to scare the poseurs (and celebrities) away. So while Don Hill's may not impress those who haven't been the same since Sid killed Nancy, its mohawked girl bands and genitalia-inspired wall art are, um, pleasant additions to the NY music scene. |
